May is Melanoma Awareness Month. Since skin cancer is the most common form of cancer we wanted to share “How to avoid sun damage and what to do if you discover you already have damage.”

Skin cancer is a lifestyle disease that affects all ages. The good news is that it is highly preventable.

Reduce Your Skin Cancer Risk

Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun is strongest.

Do not burn. A person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns at any point in life.

Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths. UV radiation from tanning machines is known to cause cancer in humans, and the more time a person has spent
tanning indoors, the higher the risk.

Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking
sunglasses.

Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum
(UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Receive annual skin cancer exams.

How can I treat my existing sun damaged skin?

It’s important for the doctor to determine how deep sun damage has gone. Some brown spots are more superficial and are at the top layers of the skin and some are deeper. Once the doctor determines how deep the damage is then he can determine the best treatment. Dr. Maddox is skilled in determining the most effective treatment for various skin tones and types, we will work with you to choose the best treatment for your needs.

To combat brown spots and other sun damage Dr. Maddox uses PhotoGenesis (IPL) or the SmartXide DOT CO2 lasers to treat brown spots – the deeper sun damage or pigmentation requires different type of laser to get a more consistent response.

PhotoGenesis is a broadband light therapy that targets brown spots close to the surface of the skin commonly caused by excessive sun exposure. Results are typically achieved in 1-2 treatments while full correction can occur at 3-5 treatments.

Chemical peels have incredible regenerating properties; they strip away damage and allow the skin to grow back healthier and more vibrant. All chemical peels vary in intensity and strength. The strength of the peels depends on the chemical ingredients and the level of rejuvenation you need.

Stress & Weight Gain

There is a saying, “Show me the size of your belly, and I will show you the size of your stress.” Study after study indicates the relationship between increased stress and increased weight as well as other health problems.

When we take a look at the biochemical changes that happen when a body is under stress, we can begin to understand why stress reduction is so crucial to weight loss and long-term weight maintenance.

Let’s take a look at some of the physical changes in the body when it perceives stress. First we must remember our friend the thyroid gland. This gland is responsible for secreting hormones which stimulate our cells to work better and faster. The result is a higher metabolic rate in the body. You can imagine when these hormones are working well, it is easier to maintain a healthy weight.

Stress is a Trigger

Now let’s introduce you to our adrenals—our stress glands. They sit atop the kidneys and secrete many different hormones, one of which is cortisol. Cortisol has many functions, but what is interesting in terms of weight and metabolism is its relationship with thyroid hormones. Cortisol interferes with the thyroid hormones’ abilities to work correctly when it is either too high or too low. So stress increases cortisol (or decreases it after many years) and this inhibits the metabolic rate in our body. Simple, right?

So, where does stress come from? It can result from emotional sources like relationship challenges, financial burdens, anxiety, etc. It can also be the result of physical stressors like eating inflammatory foods (such as sugar, saturated fats, gluten, dairy) having the wrong mix of bacteria in the gut, or getting inadequate sleep.

What can we do? It can be difficult to change the emotional stressors in your life, but you can shift your reaction to them.

Letting go of things you cannot change can be easier said than done, but we can try our best.

Decreasing physical stress can be easier. Shifting to whole foods low in sugar, gluten, and bad fats can profoundly impact the body in a positive way.

Exercise is an effective way to alleviate stress and shift our hormones for the better.

Laughter and deep breathing seem simple, but have profound effects if done routinely.

In addition, there are many different natural medicines which can correct these imbalances. At Thrive, we are committed to helping each patient correct underlying issues which are all too often roadblocks to success.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery released their statistics for 2012 recently and surprising to many was the dramatic increase in the number of women having “arm lift surgery”… a 4,000% increase this decade. In fact arm lifts are currently the fastest growing procedure in the industry.

We’ve seen The Today Show, USA Today and most major media sources comment this week about arm lifts and the claim that the rise might be inspired by first lady Michelle Obama and her very toned arms. However, what they are not discussing is the surgical scar associated with arm lifts, a scar that runs from the the armpit to the elbow.

In Portland, our patients desire a non-surgical or minimally invasive option for reducing “bat wings” and loose arm skin whenever possible. We have several options for tightening loose skin including Exilis, a non-invasive device which uses RF energy to perform skin tightening and fat reduction. The Exilis skin tightening procedure has minimal to no recovery or downtime and most patients are very excited with their outcomes.

Although everyone isn’t a candidate for non-surgical arm lifts, it is worth investigating as an option before having a painful surgery with a very unattractive scar.

I eat healthy and exercise regularly but see little or no results

We hear this more and more often these days. Maintaining a healthy weight is important to maintaining good health. This means that if you are overweight or obese losing weight is more than just a “To-do item” on your list, it’s a medical issue. As we age, our bodies naturally decrease hormone production and in men this means lower testosterone. Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone and for some men this decreased production occurs too early (mid 30′s) or is excessive.

Andropause is the emotional and physical change that many men go through, similar to Menopause. Symptoms of Andropause include:

Fatigue

Loss of Motivation

Lower sex drive (libido), infertility and/or erectile dysfunction

Weight gain

Sleep disturbances and insomnia

Depression

Loss of zest for life

Lower bone density

Hair loss

One treatment for Andropause in men is Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Testosterone replacement should only be considered if you have symptoms and your blood levels confirm it. Our medical director and age management specialist Dr. Adam Maddox is highly knowledgeable of Andropause and has been treating men with low testosterone for over a decade.

The goal of the treatment is not to bring testosterone levels above and beyond what’s normal but raise them enough to make a difference with the least amount of side effects. This is typically into the optimal range of 850-900 ng/dL. Benefits include increased muscle mass, sharpened memory and concentration, increased libido and improved energy levels.

During your visit, Dr. Maddox will take a detailed medical history and analyze your current state of health. Upon the completion of required laboratory testing, Dr. Maddox will discuss your test results and design a treatment plan for your specific needs. Your customized treatment plan may consist of the integration of hormone replacement, nutrition, exercise and nutritional supplements.

Since we are having an Exilis Open House on April 17, 2013, we wanted to share more information and experiences about the device and our body contouring services.

Millions watched while Kathy Lee Gifford had Exilis performed on The Today Show a few years ago. Since then the procedure has been on local and national television and media outlets around the world including The Doctors and The View.

Although the majority of our patients are fit and athletic many suffer from small areas of loose skin or a little extra fat. We frequently recommend the Exilis to these candidates, especially for our patients who are adverse to needles, surgery or downtime.

Exilis is ideal for patients who need a little bit of tightening or have small pockets of fat that fail to respond to diet and exercise. Patients who have previously had a liposuction procedure also benefit from skin tightening and smoothing. Dr. Maddox is thrilled to offer the cost-effective and non-invasive Exilis treatment in Portland because it offers circumferential reduction and skin tightening without painful surgery.

I love everyone at Thrive. I feel so comfortable asking questions and being very candid with my body issues. My first Exilis treatment went very well with no problems or pain. Thank you Tristan!

Awesome, lost weight, feel better, feel younger!

Exilis is the newest noninvasive technology that uses both infrared and mono-polar radio frequency to minimize fat deposits on multiple areas of the body. It helps to remove life-long fat pockets without any surgery, pain or downtime.

Thrive’s aesthetic and anti-aging specialist, Dr. Maddox, provides the utmost care and gives our clients a reason to smile. Dr. Maddox and staff use the tightening hand piece and settings to achieve tightening of the neck and facial skin while preserving the volume of the face. Exilis also has the ability to treat skin issues such as sagging and wrinkles.

What does it treat?

Exilis uses a revolutionary patented technology that delivers ultrasonic waves and controlled heating to the tissue. Patients feel a warming sensation as the energy is delivered to the deeper layers of skin. Our patients experience excellent results on areas such as the abdomen, love handles, back-bra area, thighs, chin, eyes, jowls, and neck. You can feel great in your skin and minimize the effects from sun exposure and aging.

How many treatments do I need? How soon do I see results?

Treatment times may vary depending on the size of the treatment area. During your complimentary consultation, we advise you as to the number and frequency of treatments that are recommended to achieve your desired results. A single treatment is typically 30 minutes long. Results may been seen in 1-2 treatments, although the average patient requires approximately 4-6. Moderate exercise and healthy nutrition maintain the results even longer.

What is the Recovery After Treatment?

There is no recovery or downtime associated with Exilis. Other then a brief period of redness, 15-30 minutes, you can resume your normal everyday activities. Patients should increase water intake the day before and after treatment.

Men also encounter a slowing in their making of testosterone. According to a recent study, men today have lower testosterone levels then in decades past. Increasing rates of obesity and exposure to more chemicals in plastics and other substances that disrupt the production on sex hormones are said to be the cause.

Thrive Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center, LLC medical director and age management specialist, Dr. Adam Maddox, is extremely reputable in andropause and hormones replacement for men. Andropuase, when a man’s hormones start to naturally decline, typically occurs from 40 to mid 50’s. Symptoms of andropause may include weight gain, fatigue, muscle loss, depression, memory loss, decreased drive, and irritability.

Testosterone is not only responsible for the development of the male sex organs, but it has many other functions. Testosterone maintains bone growth, muscle bulk, adequate levels of red blood cells, and sexual function. A decline of testosterone can lead to a score of physical problems such as depression, erectile dysfunction, and bipolar disorders.

Having healthy levels of testosterone is so important to your heath and we work with you to build that strong foundation that was once there. Testosterone levels peak between the ages of 18-25 and then decrease at a rate of about 1% per year thereafter. It is common for middle-aged men to notice changes such as fewer erections, fatigue, and thinning skin.

Dr. Maddox has been specializing in this practice for nearly 10 years. His priority is customizing your treatment plan based up your medical history and current state of health.

If you want to improve your well-being and get back to your old self, call 503-241-3579 to set up a complimentary consultation.

It is estimated that 45 million Americans have at least one tattoo. Overtime, as many as 50% of individuals with tattoos may want to have them removed. Newer laser technology has been designed for safe and effective tattoo removal treatments.

Thrive offers state-of-the-art RevLITE™ technology that is a proven method and poses minimal risk of scarring or pigment changes. Tattoo removal in the past often required surgery and/or skin grafts, which were painful and left scarring. However, at Thrive we offer superior results in treating even the most stubborn, multiple-color tattoos effectively, efficiently and with little pain.

RevLITE™ technology allows patients to have tattoos comfortably removed with minimal risk of scarring, pain, or pigment changes. Light energy from the laser is absorbed into the tattoo ink, breaking the ink into tiny particles. The ink is then removed by the body, while leaving healthy skin cells intact. The precise focusing of the laser makes it possible to remove the tattoo without harming the surrounding skin.

This revolutionary system can remove many types of tattoos including professional, amateur, and surgical tattoos. This laser process leaves little to no scarring and requires only a topical anesthetic to help with any discomfort. A standard tattoo can take 8-12 treatments to remove. This may vary depending on factors including color of tattoo, skin color, type of ink used, as well as the size and location of the tattoo.

Each treatment is specific to the personal needs of each individual. To gain a more thorough understanding about tattoo removal contact Thrive Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center, LLC at 503-241-3579. You can schedule a complementary consultation to discuss your desires.
