Adults in the Portland area ask, “What is the difference between Botox and fillers?”

If you are one of the 48.3% of residents in the Portland area over the age of 35, you are probably starting to pay a little more attention to the subject of facial rejuvenation. Media bombards us with anti-aging buzzwords, but it’s important to know the facts to make informed decisions that are right for your body, your lifestyle, and your budget.

Our name, Thrive Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Center, tells you that we are a great resource for information. One of the questions most commonly posed to Dr. Adam Maddox and the Thrive team is “What is the difference between Botox and fillers.” While both procedures are considered “injectables,” their compounds and purposes are quite different.

Botox® Cosmetic is the trade name for a naturally-occurring protein called botulinum toxin. Botox is produced by one of the most respected names in medicine – Allergan. It’s called a neuromodulator because it interrupts signals from nerves that tell muscles in your face to contract. Over time, those repeated contractions form furrows in the skin that make you look angry and tired. In Dr. Maddox’s experienced hands, Botox does not result in a frozen or artificial appearance. It simply allows these tense areas to relax, forming a smoother foundation for surface skin. Continued Botox treatments retrain muscles for long-term improvement.

The product is very safe. It has been used in medicine for many years. It was approved by the FDA in early 2002 for the cosmetic improvement of frown lines between the eyebrows, and in September of 2013 to soften crow’s feet wrinkles around the eyes. Treatment sessions are brief, and there is essentially no downtime.

Dermal fillers go by trade names such as Juvéderm, Restylane, Radiesse, and others. They are usually formulated with hyaluronic acid, poly-L-lactic acid, and sometimes calcium microspheres in a smooth gel base. Fillers are versatile. They are used to add volume (such as at the temples), make lips fuller, soften facial creases, erase wrinkles, and improve the appearance of some types of scars.

Dr. Maddox and his team are innovators in designing combination protocols customized for each unique patient. For many women and men in the Portland area, Botox and fillers used together indefinitely postpone the need for a surgical facelift. While results are different for each patient, injectables are temporary – periodic touch-up appointments are needed to maintain a youthful look.
