Men in Portland, OR benefit from positive impacts of testosterone therapy
Low testosterone levels, or “Low T”, can have a number of negative impacts on not only a man’s physical appearance, but also the way his body functions. This deficiency in testosterone can occur as part of the natural aging process or due to other factors, such as being overweight or having diabetes. Fortunately, there are effective therapies for men to boost their testosterone levels so they can get back to feeling and looking like themselves again. At Thrive Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Center in Portland, OR, Dr. Adam Maddox has over 15 years of experience in using testosterone therapy to treat low testosterone levels, and has seen first-hand the positive effects it has on men’s quality of life.
Signs and symptoms of low testosterone
Many people are familiar with the decline in female hormones as women age (“menopause”), but are unaware that the same decline happens in men’s hormone levels as well (called “andropause”). In fact, men’s testosterone levels actually peak between the ages of 18 and 25, and begin slowly declining soon after that. Certain conditions can expedite this process—for example, men who have diabetes have approximately double the risk of having low testosterone, and approximately 30% of overweight men have low T, whereas only 6.4% of normal weight men have it.
If you have been suffering from several of the following symptoms, you may have a testosterone deficiency.
- Loss of muscle mass
- Increased body fat
- Reduced sex drive and/or erectile function
- Loss of hair on your body, such as your beard and chest
- Mood disorders such as depression or irritability
- Inability to focus
- Memory problems or difficulty finding the right words
Often, the changes associated with low testosterone can be subtle and hard to detect at first, but may increase over time. Fatigue and lack of interest in sex are often the first signs of this hormonal change.
Testosterone therapy options
Dr. Adam Maddox is an anti-aging expert and serves as the medical director at Thrive. He works one-on-one with each patient to learn about their medical history, symptoms, and treatment preferences, and will order laboratory tests to determine whether you have low testosterone. He will then use this information to create a highly customized treatment plan for you. Often, testosterone therapy is combined with other therapies, such as thyroid support, nutrition and exercise programs, or other supplements.
There are several types of testosterone replacement therapies available:
- Skin patches
- Topical gels or creams
- Pellet implants
- Oral and sublingual
In his experience, Dr. Maddox has found that pellet implants typically work the best for most patients because they provide a steady, controlled dose, but he will make a recommendation for you based on your unique needs. Pellet implants use bio-identical testosterone, and are placed underneath the skin in the hip/buttocks area to sustain your testosterone levels for three to six months at a time. The pellet placement procedure only takes about 30 minutes and is repeated approximately three times per year.
Impact of testosterone therapy
With your testosterone levels balanced, many of the negative symptoms of low testosterone can be reversed. Benefits you may see include a decrease in body fat, improved erections and sexual function, better cognitive function, more energy, increased muscle mass, and a more positive mood.
In addition, optimized testosterone levels can also help ward off certain diseases and conditions that can negatively affect you as you age. Testosterone supplementation has been shown to help improve bone density, as well as hemoglobin levels in men with anemia. There is also some evidence that testosterone therapy can help with blood sugar control, which can help prevent conditions such as diabetes. Optimal testosterone levels can also help ward off cardiovascular disease, as low T has been associated with a higher risk of cardiac disorders. With improved body composition and a better metabolism, it is possible that testosterone therapy can help improve your longevity due to its reduction in health conditions that can shorten your lifespan.
