Sculptra overview
Sculptra is a dermal filler that is used to augment skin and soft tissues. Sculptra injections are used in strategic locations on the face or body, where they not only provide instant volume and fill in wrinkles but also stimulate your body’s natural production of collagen, which is the protein that provides elasticity and youthfulness to the skin. This boost in collagen produces longer lasting youthful effects.
Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid or PLLA. This substance is biocompatible, which means that it works in harmony with your body.
Benefits of Sculptra for facial skin rejuvenation
As you age, you lose volume and fat in your face, which causes your skin to sag and creates wrinkles. Sculptra is primarily used to treat the deep wrinkles in the following areas of your face:
- Chin wrinkles – the lines formed horizontally across your chin
- Laugh lines also called “marionette lines” – the lines that frame your mouth
- Smile lines also called “nasolabial folds” – the lines between your nose and mouth
Sculptra before and after pictures show the dramatic effect that this non-invasive treatment can have on your appearance.

Sculptra® Butt Lift
Many people think that non-invasive cosmetic treatments such as Sculptra® injections are only used on the face, but they can also be used to produce excellent results in other areas. Numerous patients have achieved firmer, more toned-looking buttocks with a Sculptra® Butt Lift (SBL). In this procedure, the doctor first numbs the area and then injects Sculptra® into the upper buttocks using a very fine needle. That augments the buttocks, improving texture and volume, and diminishing the appearance of cellulite. Depending on the results you are seeking, you may need multiple treatments spaced about six weeks apart.
Additional injections to enhance volume and shape can be necessary due to the process that SBL triggers. Remember that Sculptra® is formulated with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). This substance promotes collagen remodeling. Since these collagen proteins give your skin its structure, it is built over time (weeks or months). Sculptra® does not produce the same type of instant results that you may get with Hyaluronic Acid fillers. However, traditional HA fillers, for instance, are not collagen stimulators. They do not promote this beneficial process in the same way as PLLA fillers and similar products. Additionally, collagen stimulators are generally associated with longer-lasting results. While the results from SBL are not permanent, you can enjoy your enhanced curves for around two years post-treatment, at which time your body naturally and safely absorbs the Sculptra®.
As an injectable treatment, SBL does not carry with it the risks of complications and side effects of surgical treatments administered to lift and augment your backside. Since it is not invasive, recovery is minimal. You can generally get back to your regular activities and routine within around one to two days post-injection. Side effects are limited mainly to those associated with other nonsurgical aesthetic procedures; temporary injection-site bruising, surface irregularities (lumps and bumps), itching, and red discoloration.
Many patients that may not be good candidates for other, more invasive procedures can safely benefit from Sculptra® Butt Lift. However, it is essential to be upfront with us about any medical conditions or medications (including herbal supplements) that you may be using. We discuss modifications that you may need to make before your appointment; for instance, the use of tobacco products and some medications can increase your risk of complications such as bleeding and interfere with proper, fast healing.
Getting started with Sculptra: what to expect
You should consult with a qualified medical professional to determine whether Sculptra is right for you and the right number of treatments needed for your specific goals. The Sculptra cost varies from patient to patient and depends on factors such as the number of vials of Sculptra and the number of visits that are needed to achieve your desired results. The medical team will discuss the cost of your individualized treatment plan with you.
You do not need to do any special preparation in advance of a visit for Sculptra injections, except that your doctor may advise you to stop taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen for a short time before treatment to minimize the risk of bleeding.
At your visit, the doctor cleanses the area that the skin will be injected, and a topical numbing agent may be used to make you more comfortable during the procedure. Then, the doctor will inject small amounts of Sculptra into strategically mapped locations with a very fine needle.
The downtime you will need after Sculptra injections is minimal and you can return to your daily activities right away after the treatment.
Smooth out deep nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles with Sculptra Aesthetic.
Sculptra Aesthetic should be injected into the deep dermis and gives the appearance of an immediate correction of the defect. Massage is an important part of post-treatment care. Massage at the injection site will allow for a more even distribution of PLLA. Within days, the aqueous components of Sculptra Aesthetic are absorbed and natural swelling resolves, resulting in the temporary reappearance of the defect. But microparticles of PLLA, the main component of Sculptra Aesthetic, begin working within the deep dermis to replace lost collagen and reinforce skin structure. As microparticles of PLLA are absorbed, a collagen framework is provided to gradually restore volume. This results in the smoothing out of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles in which the deep dermal grid pattern crosshatch injection technique is appropriate and which can result in a more refined appearance that can last up to two years. In time it is theorised that an increase in collagen deposition occurs correcting structural deficiencies caused by collagen loss and fat atrophy.
The side effects you may experience include swelling, bruising, redness, bumps, or pain at the site that it was injected.
You will notice some immediate results due to the additional volume of the Sculptra filler, but the biggest impact from Sculptra may take six weeks to a few months after the treatment to be noticeable. This is because it takes time for the boost that Sculptra gives to your body’s natural collagen production to take effect. The results from Sculptra injections typically last about two years.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sculptra filler?
Sculptra is an injectable dermal filler that is made from a synthetic, biocompatible material called poly-L-lactic acid. Sculptra is a highly effective dermal filler that provides anti-aging, volume-boosting, and anti-wrinkle effects for up to two years.
What is Sculptra good for?
The two main cosmetic uses for Sculptra are to boost volume that has been lost as part of the aging process or illness, and to fill in wrinkles that have formed over time.
Sculptra – where can it be used?
Sculptra is a versatile dermal filler that can be used to add youthfulness and volume to several locations on the face and body. It can correct facial wrinkles and folds that range from shallow to deep, and plump hollowed out areas in the face that can make you look older. Common areas that are treated include:
- Smile lines
- Marionette lines
- Wrinkles in the chin and neck
- Hollowed-out look beneath the eyes
- Sunken cheeks
- Lips that have lost definition
Sculptra can even be used in the buttocks area! Often called a “Sculptra butt lift,” when Sculptra is injected into the upper buttocks, it augments the shape, texture, and volume of the buttocks area and diminishes the appearance of cellulite.
Does Sculptra work?
Yes! Sculptra is highly effective at increasing facial volume in areas where it has been lost, restoring definition and youthfulness to your face. It is also effective at minimizing the appearance of wrinkles, and because its results are long-lasting, many patients prefer it over other types of cosmetic injectables.
Are Sculptra injections safe?
If you are wondering, “Is Sculptra safe?”, you are not alone. This is an important question to ask about any cosmetic procedure! Sculptra is made from a material called poly-L-lactic acid that has been used in surgical applications, such as dissolvable stitches, for over 20 years. Additionally, Sculptra was approved by the FDA for the treatment of facial wasting in patients with HIV or AIDS in 2004. Because it is made from a synthetic material that is biologically inert, there is no risk of allergic reactions to Sculptra and there is no need for pre-treatment allergy testing.
What is the treatment like?
Dr. Maddox will discuss whether you need anesthetic prior to your treatment, which can minimize discomfort from the injections. He will then determine the best locations to inject Sculptra and inject it evenly underneath the skin. The treated areas will then be massaged to help distribute the material evenly so that bumps do not appear. When your treatment is complete, you can resume your normal daily activities immediately, with no downtime.
How long will Sculptra last? Does Sculptra last forever?
Many patients ask, “Is Sculptra a permanent filler?” While it is not permanent, the results do last much longer than most other injectables. In fact, Sculptra can last up to two years, whereas many other injectables only last a few months. This makes Sculptra a great choice for patients when budget and time constraints are important factors. More frequent procedures tend to cost more, so long-lasting treatments like Sculptra can be beneficial for your wallet, as well as save you time.
Are Sculptra injections painful?
Because people have varying tolerance levels for pain, each person will experience the treatment differently. Some patients find that the injections are painful, whereas others do not experience any discomfort. If you have sensitive skin, we can use a topical anesthetic before your injections to enhance your comfort during the procedure.
Where to get Sculptra?
While Sculptra is safe, it is important to seek a highly trained professional to evaluate your skin for whether you are a good candidate and to perform the injections. If you are thinking about getting Sculptra injections, we encourage you to call Dr. Adam Maddox at Thrive Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Center in Portland, OR.
